Hi diedsee

1080i is one of the high definition resolution.  There are also 480p 576p but 1080p has the most beautiul definition.  I is for interlaced and p is for progressive.  Of course progressive scan is better than interlaced.  To give you a better understanding on what is 480p 576p or 1080i you may think about the DVD picture quality.  How do you think about the DVD qualtiy it is sharp and clear but it is a 480i picture quality only.  You can imagine the quality of the 1080i is really very sharp and beautiful.  Our government is just announced the boardcast of TV using one of high definition (not yet decided but we have to follow our China's resolution scale).  If you are planning to buy a new TV you have to consider that it must be HDTV ready (better to be 16:9)  otherwise you may need to use a set-top box to view tbe HDTV boardcast but don't expect the two free channel provide companies will give you excellent picture screen as I do believe they will not spend too much money to upgrade their system.

For your information the best display screen is CRT not LCD nor Plasma.  Although I buy an LCD TV because I like it slim size.
